"Fortune favours the bald..."
Last updated June 5, 2009 by Brooke, demented webmistress.

I have terrible, crapulent, unpalatable news. John Caspell died unexpectedly May 2, 2009, of complications from surgery after he was hit by a drunk driver. I was in his hospital room, chatting happily with him, when he died. It was peaceful, fast, painless. But did I mention unexpected? Holy shit.

Being a solo act isn't exactly what I had in mind, but here I am. I'll be at Duckon (June 12-14) and Concertino (June 19-21) as planned. Well, in a way very different than what we planned, but you know what I mean. Sometime this summer this website will be relaunched / updated. For now I'm just going to leave everything below as is - ignore the rusty out of date bits and all that awkward present tense.

-Brooke.

Direct praise & fancy jewels to brookea AT shaw DOT ca, and complaints & exploding packages to John.

Who are we? We are a dorky filk duo from British Columbia! Yes, the rumours are true: Balder than Ju & Katy! Shorter than Echo's Children! West of Dandelion Wine! Fewer Ys than vixy & Tony!

Brooke sings & plays banjo and banjola, John sings & plays guitar.
Look, there we are! ACK! (Thanks to Debbie Ridpath Ohi for the picture to the left, taken at OVFF 22!)

Where are we? We are super-duper honoured announce that we are the Interfilk Guests at Concertino 2009, next June in Massachusetts!!! Yahoo! Brooke will be at Duckon in June 2009.

Here are most of our songs. There are PDF lead sheets available on the lyric page for each song. The chords are off to the side because that's how I like to read chords. If you are baffled about where the breaks should go, email me and I will try to help. brookea AT shaw DOT ca Also a lot of the chords are altered somewhat to approximate for guitarists what I do on banjo - if you're a banjo player, I'd be totally chuffed to send tablature or demonstrate in person what I actually play!

I have had some people email to ask if we mind if they cover our songs. HAHAHA OF COURSE NOT! Every time I hear about someone playing one of my songs I do a happy-dance. John is way too dignified to do a happy dance, but he might snarl cheerfully or something. Whee! Yes! Go ahead! Why do you think we have a website with lyrics! It is not to taunt you! (Okay, it is ALSO to taunt you.)

All the song lyrics on the site are licensed under creative commons share-alike attribute non-commercial licenses - this means among other things that you can freely republish them in your non-commercial convention songbook. We appreciate being notified because it's fun to hear about our songs' travels, but it's not required, as long as you attribute them to us and include the CC license note.

Recordings of songs with original tunes are likewise CC licensed - distribute them, mangle them, etc. as you please within the terms of that license. (Follow the link to the CC site at the bottom of each song page if you are confused about what this means.) Whee! Recordings of songs to another person's music are NOT licensed in this way - we have obtained permission from the copyright holders to have these recordings on our site, but that's it.
